What's this now... a soundtrack?  With a novel?

How Q  came up with the groovy tunes for Blood of the Dragon...

The first thing I did was really delve into a lot of world music that's out there.  Monks singing on mountains, wind instruments from Australia, and some really freaky alternative stuff  coming out of Africa.  I probably went through about a hundred hours of material and took some notes.  I did this because I was looking for some influences that were a little more tribal or pre-renaissance since most of the novel takes place at this different technology level.

I saw the main characters as the type you might see at a U2 concert or rave so I then constructed some songs using two very different points of view within the context of the same tune.  An electronic music composition meets a naked singing lion god sort of thing came about.   Why?  I thought, that as the main characters, Joel, Spree, and Sara went through the worlds of San-soon and Tan-tar they would try to relate to something they were familiar with, when seeing something strange to them.  From these early demos, I got the OK from Matt.  He sent me a batch of lyrics that he started working out.  I would later go and touch up the lyrics but I decided I needed some help fleshing out the more musical ideas...

Enter Dave.  Dave and I had done some earlier work together on a project we called Mutant.  Cool stuff that I am currently remastering.  Dave has a different perspective in general on music but we dig a lot of the same bands so we worked almost perfectly together.  Dave came up with some really driving guitar and bass lines.  His vocal impersonations came in handy too.  Most importantly though, Dave is an anything goes kind of guy in music with no preconceived notions of how things should be.  His input and great ear were a godsend.
